Marjorie

Marjorie has had the same haircut for the past 25 years, and she sees no reason to change it. It has served her quite well. And she needs the routine, the security, something she can control in a world that feels upside down at times.

See, Marjorie is an alcoholic. And life felt out of control for so long. It has been 17 years, 8 months and 3 days since her last drink. That fateful day that has haunted her for so many years. Has been the main character in too many of her nightmares.

But she is making amends like the steps tell her to do. She tries to live her life that way now. She has made mistakes, sure, but she has shown that she is no longer that person who show up to her nephew’s baptism black out drunk and ‘accidentally’ made out with the priest performing the event and then flashed her boobs to the congregation. No, she will never go back to that reckless, selfish lifestyle.

She has made so many changes… learning meditation, taking up her watercolor and finding AA meetings on a regular basis. She also found love, something she never thought possible. Something she never thought she deserved. But then William walked into her life 3 years ago, and she felt hope for the first time. With him, she could be herself; she unloaded all of her past indiscretions pretty early in the relationship to avoid any issues down the road. It was the scariest thing she’s ever done. But you know what? William listened to all of it, and when she was done, he got up to get her a Kleenex, sat next to her and wrapped her in the most loving hug she had ever received. And he never left her side.

These days she is learning to trust herself a bit more each day. She gets outside every single day to feel the sun on her face. To feel grateful for the life she has worked so hard for. And who knows, maybe she will try out a new hair style the next time she goes in…
